In the Revolutionary period, there were plenty of people who also thought the liberty of the press had gone too far. Those people were usually in one of two camps: (1) Loyalists attempting to prevent war; (2) individuals who found themselves the target of criticism.

After the Revolution, those who thought there was too much abuse in the press were usually individuals in positions of power.

This isn't to say that they were right or wrong, but just that those who were the target of the press are usually the first to contest its liberties.
